With Lent only a few days away, let’s take a more personal approach to the Jubilee theme of hope.
Following the official launch of the Jubilee Year 2025, we shared an article called Pilgrims of Hope where we explored themes from Spes Nos Confundit and how they would feature in our various Jubilee resources. With Lent only a few days away, let’s take a more personal approach to the Jubilee theme of hope.
Remembering Hope
I wonder what it is that personally brings you hope. For me, there are some obvious things like seeing the shoots of spring bulbs coming through and remembering that warmer days are surely on their way! Or receiving a message from a friend with good news about their cancer diagnosis, meaning we can plan ahead a little further than I thought.
Even when we notice these little moments of hope, we can still experience moments of hopelessness in the face of adversity. Increasingly, it seems that our technologically advanced and connected world is experiencing great disconnection, isolation, war, violence, crime and poverty on local and global scales. We can feel helpless to remedy these large-scale problems as we witness them on the news and on social media. Our hope for our world and ourselves can begin to wane.
It is in response to this that the Holy Father has given us the great theme of hope to guide us through this particular Jubilee Year. He says in Spes Non Confundit,
…may the Jubilee be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the “door” (cf. Jn 10:7.9) of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere and to all as “our hope” (1 Tim 1:1).

Entering Lent 2025 With Renewed Hope
A number of Christians over the years have said to me that they really don’t like Lent. I think for some, it was because they saw it as just more things to add to their ‘to do’ list – give something up, donate to a good cause, feel guilty about not praying enough?! Others perceived it as a sombre time, focussing on death, and they didn’t want to focus on death. While others experienced so much disappointment in their lives, they didn’t want failing at their Lenten observances to be another failure or disappointment to add to their list.
None of us wants to experience disappointment. So perhaps if you feel something like this about the upcoming Lenten season, maybe you could rethink Lent as a time to receive new hope from the Lord. St Paul tells us that,
… hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Romans 5:5
What might that look like in practice?
A Time To Get Things In Order
Over the centuries, Jubilee Years have been an opportunity for individuals, families and wider societies to reorder their lives and refocus their worship on God. People allowed their land to rest in order to experience fruitful future harvest. Slaves were set free in order to restore dignity. Debts were cancelled in order to allow people a fresh start. People sought and offered forgiveness in order to allow healing in relationships.
These themes of worship, rest, freedom, new life, forgiveness and healing are not only Jubilee themes, but themes that the Church revisits annually during Lent to enable us to grow in intimacy with God and in greater love and service of our neighbour.
As you enter the Lenten desert with Jesus this year, take a moment to consider what prayer and rest might look like for you.
Pope Francis, in his Jubilee Prayer, suggests that we ask the Holy Spirit to reawaken hope:
Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom. May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
What in your life needs a fresh start? Or where do you need to experience the freedom that Jesus offers you?
We hope that, during Lent, our Jubilee Year resources will play a role in helping you as well as others in your school community to have a personal encounter with Jesus and renew your hope in His promises.
Receiving God’s Hope this Lent
See below some of the resources available for you during this Jubilee Year of Hope!
During Lent, our ‘Jubilee Joy’ Celebrations of the Word resources will enable subscribing primary schools to encounter the hope of Jesus through exploring Jubilee themes through the lens of the Lenten Sunday Gospels.
‘Jubilee Journey’ (worth £190) is a FREE assembly resource series which shares 7 new short films telling inspiring stories linked to Jubilee themes, and includes adaptable prayer resources, all in support of amazing UK charities.
We believe that the powerful true stories that we are sharing for secondary students can impact you too. With this in mind, we’ve created a 6-week Lenten reflection email series for school staff, so you too can enjoy this Jubilee Journey. We hope that these 6 email reflections – starting on Ash Wednesday – will give you and your colleagues a brief moment of rest and some spiritual food for thought.
Why not extend a hope-filled invitation to the parents in your community by sharing with them our Parent Newsletter and Prayer and Liturgy Online Parent Portal where they can access prayer resources from home, including a lyric video from the popular One Life Music special Jubilee song.
CPD Sessions for the Start of the New Academic Year…
Whether you need to familiarise returning staff with programme updates or you need to get new staff up to speed, we’ve got sessions for you starting on 1st September...
Looking back over this academic year, we’ve had so many great articles to share with you through the Teacher Hub that we’ve decided to compile some of the most popular to share with you again in case you missed them the first time round!
The first thing you will notice at the start of the new academic year is that we will have a new website. We have been working with some wonderful website designers and developers to address some of the key issues that our users have fed back. We hope that our new website will improve your user experience and the way you access the content.
Everywhere you turn in Rome there are joyful signs of life and sobering reminders of death! Rome: a bustling city, with rich architecture, art, history and open-air opera. Delicious aromas of espresso and the flavours of pizza and gelato – a feast for the senses! Here in the midst of all this hustle and bustle of life, lies the home and much history of Catholicism.
Find out how to renew your subscription here…
Did you know that most Life to the Full subscriptions expire on 31st July 2022? It is the same case with the majority of Combined Collective Worship and Life to the Full subscriptions. To maintain access and to prepare for the new academic year in September, schools need to renew.
There were so many enthusiastic teachers who applied for their children to have the opportunity to be Pilgrim Guides for our Ten Ten Year of Pilgrimage – but only three could be chosen…
During our Ten Ten Year of Pilgrimage there will be many experiences and encounters but perhaps none so dramatic as Holy Week: Our Pilgrimage to Jerusalem – the final leg of Our Pilgrimage to the Cross. To use a fairground analogy, it’s a rollercoaster!
A Day for Everything: International Day for Persons of Disability
Did you know that 15th November is ‘Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day’? Or that 25th August is ‘Kiss and Make Up Day’? Or that the whole of April is dedicated to ‘Straw Hat Month’?!
If you came here expecting an in-depth character analysis of Clark Kent and Superman across the entire franchise, I’m afraid you’ll be sorely disappointed. (Sorry-not-sorry about the deliberately misleading picture and title).
On the eve of All Hallows or as most of us know it, Halloween – children and adults dress in skeleton, witch or ghoul costumes, surrounded by cobwebs, images of graveyards and terrifying accessories to celebrate the seasonal trick or treat fest with sugar highs and scary frights!
We are delighted to announce that we have created a number of exciting new CPD opportunities for both subscribers and non-subscribers in the areas of Collective Worship and RSHE.
On Saturday 1 May 2021, we celebrated the second Feast Day for St Joseph, which focuses on his inspiring qualities as a worker. This is especially important this year, as Pope Francis has proclaimed this year ‘The Year of Joseph’.
