No ‘A’ word in Lent

The Liturgical Year is punctuated with seasons of feasting and fasting. Lent is, of course, a long season of fasting, but it’s not just physical goods that we fast from, for example, certain foods or social media. During the formal liturgies of the Catholic Church we fast from saying or singing the joyous word ‘Alleluia!’ and then in Eastertide we say and sing it during the liturgies with even greater gusto! The absence of singing ‘Alleluia’ during Lent reminds us poignantly that Jesus’ great victory over death at Easter is something great to shout about by the time the Easter Vigil arrives on Holy Saturday!

School Eastertide Filming Project

During the season of Eastertide (50 days of rejoicing and celebration), our Collective Worship resources will explore the overarching theme ‘We are an Easter people and “Alleluia” is our song!’ and we are inviting schools around the country to film short videos of their children saying this theme phrase in different and creative ways. The script to follow is simply this:

Child 1: Alleluia!

Child 2: Alleluia!

Child 3: Alleluia!

Child 4: Alleluia!

Child 5: Alleluia!

All:        We are an Easter people and “Alleluia” is our song!

Beyond this, we encourage schools to be as creative as they wish! Some ideas might include using dance, art, drama, body sculpture, animation, sign language, other languages etc. The possibilities are endless!

When you have created your video, simply share it on your school’s Twitter account and we will endeavour to retweet all schools who tag @TenTen_UK in their Tweet. Eastertide lasts until Pentecost Sunday (5 June 2022), so there’s plenty of time between Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday to get your videos prepared and tweeted!

Things to think of when you’re filming:

  • Film in landscape, on any good camera phone.
  • Choose a light, bright location.
  • The video should be no longer than 20 – 30 seconds long, and can involve more children/groups than the example script above.
  • When complete, share the video on your school’s Twitter account tagging @TenTen_UK.
